Residential Dual-Fuel Guidelines
Dual Heat:
- Current rate for new and existing installations: click here.
- Eligible back-up heating systems include: storage heaters and oil, gas, or propane-fueled systems.
- Back-up heating systems must be capable of heating the entire home on the coldest day of the year.
- Breakers installed in the dual-heat electrical panel are controlled by the small relay located in the radio receiver.
- Meters must be on the outside of the home - an additional rebate may be available to move inside meter outside.
Water Heating:
- Only dual-fuel customers are eligible for this rate.
- The water heater must be wired for control to be eligible for this rate.
- Short term cycling:
- Four hours maximum control per control period.
- $3 per month credit.
- Water heater is wired into the circuit breaker of the main electrical panel.
- Water heater is controlled by the large relay in the radio receiver.
- Long-term cycling:
- Eight hours maximum control per control period.
- Rate same as dual-heat rate: click here.
- Water heater must be wired into the circuit breaker of the dual-heat electrical panel.
- Water heater is controlled by the large relay in the radio receiver.
Air Conditioning:
- Only dual-heat customer are eligible for this rate.
- Rate applies only to homes with single-phase, 240-volt residential central air conditioners.
- The air conditioner must be wired for cycling to be eligible for this rate.

- The air conditioner must be wired into the circuit breaker of the dual-heat electrical panel.
- MPS will cycle the air conditioner compressor (approximately ten minutes on and ten minutes off) using the small relay in the radio receiver.
Other Qualifying Loads: Hot Tubs and Pool Heaters
- Only MPS dual-fuel customers are eligible to receive the dual-fuel rate for other qualifying loads.
- Hot tubs and/or pool heaters must be wired for control to be eligible for this rate.
- On-Qualifying Loads: Washers, Dryers, Ranges, and Saunas
Financing/Rebates:
- New homes installing dual-fuel, central air conditioning, and electric water heating may be eligible for a loan or cash rebate from MPS.
- New homes and existing homes installing only the dual-fuel system may be eligible for a loan or cash rebate from MPS.
- An additional rebate may be available to move an inside meter outside.
