PRESS RELEASE: Notice of Public Meeting and Approval for New Surface Water Intake Protection Plan

PRESS RELEASE: Notice of Public Meeting and Approval for New Surface Water Intake Protection Plan

For Immediate Release on Wednesday, June 6, 2023

Moorhead Public Service (MPS) is finalizing a new Surface Water Intake Protection Plan (SWIPP) for the Red River of the North and is scheduling a Public Meeting to receive comments from the public and accept and approve the final SWIPP.

The Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) has worked with MPS since 2020 to produce a collaborative SWIPP meant to educate, monitor, and protect the water quality of the Red River of the North, as it serves as the primary surface water source for MPS’ customers. The SWIPP is a voluntary process meant to foster local and regional collaboration to tackle source water monitoring and protection on a larger scale than MPS can accomplish on its own.

MPS has a physical copy of the SWIPP for public access and viewing at MPS; main billing office located at 500 Center Avenue 2nd floor, Moorhead MN 56560.

MPS plans to receive public comments on the SWIPP up to the scheduled Commission meeting on June 27, 2023, at which time a Public Meeting and commentary period will be held.

After this Public Meeting has concluded, the Meeting Commission intends to approve the SWIPP.

MPS Water Division staff is available to answer questions.
