SUMMER 1999
You're Invited
Help Moorhead Public Service celebrate the dedication of the community’s
new wind turbine. Join us Thursday, June 24, from 6 pm to 8 pm for
festivities at the turbine site. We’ll also unveil a permanent sign to
recognize the more than 400 Capture The Wind Charter Members who made the
turbine possible.
Attend our celebration and you could win one
of 50 windwheel lawn ornaments or the grand prize of a hot air balloon ride
for two! Register at the celebration to receive your free Charter Member
photo frame and have your picture taken next to the Charter Member sign.
Something to Celebrate
Through wind and high winds, mud, and other challenging conditions, a crew
of 10 built Moorhead’s first wind turbine in approximately two weeks. The
new addition to the Moorhead skyline weighs about the same as 20 elephants.
It began generating electricity on Friday, May 14 and will produce about
2,000,000 kWh annually. The turbine stands 263 feet high, which is
equivalent to three to four school buses stacked end-to-end.
Thumbs Up for Capture The Wind
This spring, Moorhead Public Service won a Minnesota Environmental
Initiative Award for its Capture The Wind project. "This award
recognizes the more than 400 Moorhead Public Service customers who signed up
as Charter Members to bring wind-generated electricity to Moorhead,"
says Bill Schwandt, the utility’s general manager, "as well as the
Moorhead Public Service Commission and the project team which includes
Christopher Reed, Dave Kahly, Kevin Bengtson and Carol Renner."
Your MPS Bill
If you’re a Charter Member of the Capture The Wind program, the wind power
rate will appear on your utility bill in late summer. MPS is currently
installing a new billing computer. When that’s completed, Charter Members
will be billed a half-penny per kilowatt hour more each month for wind
energy. If you signed up for 1,000 kWh of electricity from wind, you’ll
see a $5 monthly charge on your bill. If you signed up to buy all your
electricity at the wind power rate, your bill will increase a half-penny per
kWh. Commercial customers who signed up for blocks of 1,500 kWh at the wind
power rate will see a $7.50 monthly increase. Charter Member subscriptions
run for three years, with automatic annual renewals after that period.
