SPRING 2002
MOORHEAD MAKES THE RECORD!
The Congressional Record, that is. On Monday, February 18, 2002, Senator
Mark Dayton paid Moorhead a visit to recognize the leadership and vision of
Moorhead City Officials, Moorhead Public Service staff, and the citizens of
Moorhead for their commitment to the Capture The Wind program. Just days
before his visit, Senator Dayton inserted a statement in the Congressional
Record commending Moorhead for its successes with its renewable, wind energy
program. Senator Dayton cited the program as a "stellar example of
local initiative to reduce a city's dependence on fossil fuels for its
electric power." In the record, Senator Dayton writes:

"Mr. President, this week, the U.S. Senate will begin consideration of
a historic National Energy Policy, which will guarantee our citizens access
to affordable, reliable, and renewable sources of energy far into the
future. As we begin this historic debate, we can learn much from the efforts
of many organizations that have led the way in promoting a greater reliance
on renewable sources of energy. Moorhead City officials, and the citizens
themselves, are to be applauded for their vision of a city that will
continue to reduce its dependence on fossil fuels for their future
electricity needs."
Senator Dayton goes on to commend the City's leaders and MPS staff, but
notes that, "Most importantly, the 925 members of the Capture The Wind
program deserve special recognition for their commitment to renewable
energy."
Dayton concludes by suggesting that the rest of the nation can learn much
from Moorhead's example because "the citizens of Moorhead can lead the
way to a brighter future for all of us."
YOUR "WINDPUT"
IS MAKING A DIFFERENCE!
With Turbine II coming online in August of 2001, we're generating more wind
power than ever in Moorhead. Thanks to our Capture The Wind members, as of
January 2002, our two turbines have generated over 4.5 million kWh of clean,
wind energy.
Energy Services and Marketing Director, Christopher Reed explains, "By
substituting wind energy for coal-generated power, we have effectively
prevented the emission of over 9.5 million pounds of greenhouse gases.
Removing 1,100 cars from the road or planting 1,300 acres of trees would
have the same positive effect on the environment." Visit us online at www.mpsutility.com

MOORHEAD STILL CAPTURES #1 RANKING With the third-lowest premium
for wind energy and with the highest participation rate in the nation,
Moorhead Public Service and its Capture The Wind members continue to receive
kudos from the National Renewable Energy Laboratory. With 7 percent of our
customers participating in our Capture The Wind program, we're just
one-third of a percent above second-placed Los Angles Department of Water
and Power's Green Power for a Green L.A. program. Check out the top ten

NAME THAT TURBINE!
Last year, our Capture The Wind charter members submitted names for
Moorhead's first wind turbine, and during Earth Week, the new name, Zephyr,
was announced. This year, we're looking to Capture The Wind members who are
subscribed to Turbine II to submit original names for Moorhead's
second wind turbine.
It's a breeze! All you have to do is to e-mail us at connections@mpsutility.com.
In your e-mail please include your name, Daytime phone number, Evening phone
number, and your proposed name for Turbine II. Remember - only Capture The
Wind members subscribed to Turbine II are eligible to enter, and all entries
must be received or postmarked by April, 2, 2002, to be considered.
MPS staff will select the winning submissions, and winners will be notified
by April 12, 2002. The top three nominations will receive their choice of
wind-related prizes. In addition, the turbine's new name, along with the
name of the entrant submitting the most suitable pseudonym, will be listed
on a plaque on Turbine II. The new name for Turbine II will be formally
announced during Earth Week on "Windsday," April 24, 2002.
