MOORHEAD PUBLIC SERVICE RECEIVES 2001 ENERGY INNOVATOR AWARD
On behalf of Moorhead Public Service (MPS), Bill Schwandt, general
manager for the utility, received the American Public Power Association's
(APPA) Energy Innovator Award at the association's national conference in
Washington, D.C. on June 20, 2001. The Energy Innovator Award was created in
1981 in order to honor publicly owned electric utilities that have made
outstanding advances in the development or application of highly creative
energy-efficient techniques and technologies. Moorhead Public Service was
chosen to receive the award for its successes with its Capture The Wind®
(CTW) program.
Throughout the past year, the utility has received much national recognition
for its Capture The Wind® program. With over seven percent of
its customers participating in the CTW program, the National Renewable
Energy Laboratories (NREL) recognized Moorhead Public Service for having the
highest percentage of its customers participating in a renewable energy
program in the nation. NREL has also acknowledged MPS for charging the
second-lowest premium for a customer-driven wind energy program.
"The Moorhead community continues to express and show tremendous
support for the Capture The Wind® program," says MPS's
general manager, Bill Schwandt. "We are very proud to receive this
award on behalf of our Capture The Wind® members and the
community of Moorhead."
Moorhead Public Service's first turbine, Zephyr, began generating
electricity on May 14, 1999. To date, MPS and its Capture The Wind®
members have effectively prevented the emission of over 6,000,000 pounds of
greenhouse gases. With the full subscription of a second wind turbine in
November 2000, the utility plans to erect another wind turbine 600 yards
east of the first by August 2001.
