MOORHEAD PUBLIC SERVICE'S SECOND WIND TURBINE NAMED
"FREEDOM" DURING EARTH WEEK
What’s in a name? Plenty, according to about 100
Capture The Wind® members who responded to the call to
"Name that Turbine." In the latest Capture The Wind® newsletter,
members were encouraged to submit a more suitable pseudonym for the turbine
formerly known as Turbine II.
In honor of Earth Week, Moorhead Public Service (MPS)
will formally announce the new name of Turbine II on "Windsday,"
April 24, 2002, at 1:00 pm. The Moorhead Public Service Commission and
Capture The Wind® members will gather at the turbine site in
northeast Moorhead, where a plaque with the new name for Turbine II will be
unveiled and attached to the wind turbine generator.
"Once we subscribed our second wind turbine, we
realized it was rather confusing to keep referring to them as Turbine I and
Turbine II, so we asked our Capture The Wind® members to submit
new names for each turbine," said Jennifer Walz, Communications
Director for the utility. "Last year, we chose the name Zephyr
because it was submitted with the greatest frequency and because the word Zephyr
means a gentle or friendly breeze. We chose the name Freedom for our
second turbine because wind power is ‘home-grown’ American energy, and,
in a small way, each wind turbine symbolizes our freedom from foreign
sources of energy. Because the grand opening for Freedom fell on the
one-month anniversary of the events of September 11, we decided to
permanently affix a large American flag on the second wind turbine, to honor
and remember all those affected by the tragedy."
Thanks and congratulations to the following Capture The Wind®
members who submitted the winning name:
Pat and Marilyn Hecker and Tammy Kroke.
