High School Seniors win Public Power Scholarships

Moorhead Public Service awards $3,000 in scholarships

Each year, Moorhead Public Service (MPS) offers Public Power Scholarships to high-school seniors in the community who submit essays explaining the benefits of not-for-profit, municipal utilities.  This year's first place winner is Tyler Baumann, whose winning essay has earned him a $1,000 scholarship.  In addition, Baumann's essay was forwarded to compete in a state-wide contest held by Minnesota Municipal Utilities Association.  Scott Mitchell is this year's second place winner in the contest.  He will also be awarded a $1,000 scholarship through MPS.

In addition to the general scholarship contest, MPS extends the same contest to high school seniors of MPS employees.  This year's winner of the employee scholarship is David Eisenbraun, son of MPS employee Dennis Eisenbraun.

MPS is a Missouri River Energy Services (MRES) partner.  Each year, MRES awards ten, $1,000 scholarships to graduating seniors within 58 member communities located in Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Iowa.  This year, Nick Welch earned a $1,000 scholarship from MRES, renewable for up to three additional years.  For more information regarding the MRES scholarship program, please contact Bill Radio at 605.338.4042.

MPS will be presenting awards to the scholarship winners during the Commission meeting on May 27, 2008 at 4:30 p.m. at Moorhead City Hall, first floor boardroom.  The public and press are welcome.

MPS is a community-owned utility serving the residents of Moorhead, Minnesota, with electricity, water, and broadband Internet access.
