President Norman Retires

from the Moorhead Public Service Commission

and MPS Welcomes Commissioner Duysen

Long‑time Commissioner and President Ken Norman is retiring from the Moorhead Public Service Commission after nearly 30 years of dedicated service. On August 14, 2017, the Moorhead City Council appointed Cheryl Duysen to the Commission seat for Ward 1 in north Moorhead, effective September 1, 2017.

Moorhead Public Service (MPS) had many accomplishments during Ken Norman’s 29+ years on the Commission. In the mid-90s, MPS constructed a state‑of‑the‑art water treatment facility with a lime water-softening process, a highly-efficient filtration system, and the use of ozone for primary disinfection and odor/taste removal. Norman was part of MPS’ entrance into renewable energy technologies, where MPS became one of the first utilities in Minnesota to install community wind and solar programs and has been recognized regionally and nationally for its innovative renewable energy programs
.

Norman has always been a proponent of the aggressive replacement of aging infrastructure and strongly supported MPS’ Watermain Replacement Program. In addition, under Norman’s leadership, MPS constructed new and upgraded numerous electrical and water substations, pumping stations, and transmission lines—improving the reliability of MPS’ electric and water systems—as well as expansion of its water and electric service areas to prepare for future economic development.

P
resident Norman and the Commission have guided MPS through many challenging times, including the Red River floods of 1997, 2009, 2010, and 2011, and the introduction of MPS into telecommunications. Ken is known, and will be remembered, for his strong commitment to MPS’ employees, serving many years on various committees to provide competitive compensation and benefits to attract and retain MPS’ most valuable resources—its employees.

"
It has been an honor to serve the community of Moorhead and Moorhead Public Service. The employees of Moorhead Public Service are very dedicated to utility services, and its success has much to do with their dedicated service." – Ken Norman
