MOORHEAD PUBLIC SERVICE CELEBRATES

25TH ANNIVERSARY OF PUBLIC POWER WEEK

Moorhead Public Service (MPS) is celebrating Public Power Week, October 2-8, along with more than 2,000 other electric utilities that collectively provide electricity on a not‑for-profit basis to 46 million Americans.

Public Power Week is a national, annual event sponsored in conjunction with the American Public Power Association (APPA) in Washington, D.C. A tradition that began in 1986, this year APPA and its members celebrate its 25th anniversary. APPA is the service organization for community‑ and state-owned electric utilities.

“We are proud to have served the community of Moorhead for over 115 years,” Schwandt said.  “For us, the hard work is rewarding since our customers are our neighbors and friends.”

To celebrate Public Power Week in Moorhead, MPS invites the public to attend the following events on Thursday, October 6, 2011:

4:30 pm – Ribbon-Cutting Ceremony at MPS’ Solar Demonstration Site

MPS recently installed a solar photovoltaic (PV) demonstration project at 2200 28th Street North to demonstrate the feasibility of solar PV in our community and to promote customer‑scaled renewable energy projects as part of our new Capture The Energy™ Program.

5:00 pm – Ribbon-Cutting Ceremony at MPS’ Centennial Generating Station

MPS recently completed construction of the Centennial Generating Station at 717 Southeast Main to provide reserve generation capacity for the regional transmission grid and back-up generation for the community of Moorhead in an emergency.

5:00-7:00 pm – Open House at MPS’ Centennial Generating Station

Refreshments will be served. Public tours will be available during this time at MPS’ Solar Demonstration Site, Wind Turbines, Centennial Generating Station, and Centennial Substation.

“Moorhead Public Service knows how vital electricity is for the people of Moorhead and we continue to find ways to deliver it reliably, safely, and with special attention to the environment,” Schwandt said.

MPS is a community-owned utility created in 1896 to serve the residents of Moorhead, Minnesota, with electricity and water.
