Contact: Dennis Eisenbraun, Energy Services Manager MOORHEAD PUBLIC SERVICE HITS NEW PEAK Hot weather means increased power usage On Tuesday, July 19, 2011, Moorhead Public Service (MPS) set a new summer peak record for electric demand. The system topped out at over 77,700 kilowatts (kW). “This peak was due not only to the extreme combination of high temperatures and high humidity, but also in part to continued growth of the city of Moorhead,” said MPS’ Energy Services Manager Dennis Eisenbraun. Eisenbraun added, “Our system is more than capable of handling loads of this size and it is not unusual to see new peaks during the hot summer months.”
The all-time peak for electric demand for MPS, regardless of the season, was just over 77,800 kW in February 2011. The previous electric demand peak was set on July 23, 2007, at just over 77,200 kW.
Eisenbraun reminds residents that, “Reducing your energy demand during the heat of the afternoon will help keep demand down and lower your electric bill.” For energy saving tips, go to MPS’ Web site at www.mpsutility.com, click on “Bright Ideas For Your Home,” then click on “Money Saving Tips.” Moorhead Public Service is a community-owned utility serving the residents of Moorhead, Minnesota, with electricity and water. ###
